Banda Real is a Dominican merengue típico ensemble formed in Santiago in November 2008 by a group of session musicians who split from Kerubanda, backed financially by Kerubanda’s former partner Amable Guzmán and conceived from the outset as a collective without a single bandleader.

A band without a leader

In a December 2008 interview with Diario Libre, the band’s own members described this founding philosophy in explicitly anti-hierarchical terms: vocalist Joselito Trinidad said the group’s only leader was Banda Real itself, working under agreed internal rules rather than a single frontman. The original lineup brought together saxophonist Darimambo — Darío Antonio Marte, born in Los Quemados de Mao — who had already played in groups led by Félix Rosario and Domingo Arias, in El Prodigio’s La Súper Banda, and in Kerubanda; tambora player Andrés «La Tormenta»; güira player Cristian; bassist Tony; conga player Ambiorix «Lagual»; accordionist Berny Jhon; a second vocalist, Olvis García; and arranger Deivi Landestoy.

Orgullo Municipal y Cultural de Santiago

On 25 February 2014, Santiago’s Concejo de Regidores declared Banda Real Orgullo Municipal y Cultural de Santiago under Resolución 3064-13, following a motion by regidor Juan Angomás; Joselito Trinidad accepted the honor on the band’s behalf. Covering the distinction, El Caribe also reported that the group had been nominated for Agrupación Típica del Año at the Premios Soberano.

Legacy

Like other collectively conceived típico ensembles, Banda Real’s lineup has changed repeatedly since 2008 — Olvis García, for one, had left the group by 2011 and went on working across the wider merengue típico circuit — while longer-tenured members such as vocalist Vinicio López and saxophonist Darimambo have anchored its continuity. The band’s social media accounts, active in 2026, show it still performing regularly, close to two decades after setting out to prove, as its own members put it at the start, that a group could have only one leader: the group itself.
