CANOTO — Arístides Ortiz Luis — is a Dominican bass music producer and visual artist. He works in dubstep, downtempo and tearout, and he releases his heaviest material under a second name, conceptual.

A Dominican in bass music

Bass music is one of the few genres with no Dominican presence at all. It came out of London and grew in the United States, and a producer working in it from Santo Domingo has no local scene, no local venue and no local audience to build from.

He built one anyway, and entirely through the records. His work sits on Angel Collective, Full Flex Audio, Broken Vault, Juize Box, Halcyon, Port Zero and Disciple Recordings — labels that decide who is in the genre.

The catalogue

Tunnel Vision and Eclipse came in 2022, along with remixes of Madcore and Jase Proctor and Altar, made with VONRANZ. Sugar Rush, with Aphonic, and Alone followed in 2023.

In 2024 he made heartsick with Sora for Disciple Recordings. In 2025 came Satellite and, as conceptual, Haven, both for Port Zero, along with two remixes of SVDDEN DEATH and one of Subfiltronik and Bommer.

Being asked to remix SVDDEN DEATH is the kind of credit that only comes from inside the genre. It is not a Dominican achievement being noticed abroad; it is a Dominican working at the centre of something that has never had anything to do with the island.

The other half

He is also a visual artist, and he makes the artwork for his own releases. When two of Angel Collective’s three owners left, he came in to help run TRIAKIS, which puts him on the label side as well as the studio side.

The billing he gives himself is exact and holds both trades: musician and visual artist.
