Celinés Díaz is a Dominican Catholic singer-songwriter, born December 31, 1982 in Santo Domingo and raised in the mountain valley of Constanza. She began her career in secular music, signed to BMG US Latin in Miami, and walked away from it after a conversion experience in 2006. She has since described herself not as a singer but as a full-time Catholic missionary who happens to work through music.

Constanza and a first career

Díaz grew up in Constanza, the agricultural valley high in the central range, in a family that gave her a Catholic formation. She was drawn to singing and to writing songs from childhood. After finishing her studies she pursued music professionally with her family's support, was discovered by a producer, and signed a recording contract with BMG US Latin in Miami. Her debut album as a singer-songwriter was released under the name Seliné.

By the measures she had set for herself, it worked. She has said that she nonetheless felt a deep interior emptiness through those years, and that she drifted from the Church while achieving what she had wanted.

Conversion

On June 4, 2006 — Pentecost Sunday — Díaz attended an evangelisation retreat held by the Nueva Alianza de Amor community at El Buen Pastor parish. She describes a personal encounter with Jesus that day as the beginning of her conversion, and with it a sense of being called to carry a message through the thing she already knew how to do.

The reorientation was complete rather than partial. She stopped pursuing a commercial career and reframed her music as an instrument of evangelisation, a decision that drew coverage from the Catholic broadcaster Rome Reports, which framed it as trading fame for faith.

Catholic recordings

Her first Catholic production, Canto para ti, appeared in June 2009 with eleven tracks drawn from her conversion testimony. Dios es fiel followed in 2014 with ten. Her later work has come mostly as singles: Alegre Navidad in December 2015, Hágase en mí in March 2019 taking the Magnificat as its text, and Pedacito de mi alma in May 2020.

The recent catalogue includes Tengo Sed De Ti in 2021, an a cappella Noche De Paz in January 2022, and No Te Rindas later that year in both full and acoustic versions, alongside Dios De La Creación and Nuevo Pentecostés. She works with a small recurring circle: producer and arranger Joel Antigua, guitarist Junior Feliz, keyboardist Daneury Baret and vocalist Claudia Gil.

In March 2019 she premiered a new song at the 30th Catholic Book Fair alongside the Puerto Rican group Son by Four.

Place in Dominican music

Dominican Christian music is documented largely through its evangelical wing — the worship bands, the arena nights, the Premios Arpa circuit. Díaz belongs to a different and thinner-recorded tradition: Catholic liturgical and devotional song, closer to prayer than to performance, distributed to congregations and retreats rather than to a market. Her catalogue is small by commercial standards and was never meant to be otherwise.

What makes her worth the entry is the shape of the career rather than its size. A Dominican artist who reached a major international label and then left it deliberately, on principle, is unusual in any genre. Her recordings document the Catholic strand of Dominican devotional music at a moment when almost everything else in the country's Christian scene was moving toward the evangelical model.
