Dimanchy, born Domingo Antonio Concepción Ramírez on 18 July 1961 in Miches, is a Dominican merengue singer and songwriter known for the catchphrase «¡Coge brisa!» and for a run of hits in the 1990s that began with the production «Ojo por Ojo». He writes for himself and for other performers, and has said that composing has been part of his life since childhood.

Miches and the first bands

He grew up in Miches and began writing songs as a child; «No Te Vayas» is among his earliest. With other young musicians from the town he moved to Santo Domingo, where they paid for their university studies by playing in bands. He says he was composing in earnest by the age of fifteen.

New York and «Ojo por Ojo»

He later went to New York by way of Puerto Rico, joining his mother, and worked in hotels while singing in English, a language he speaks fluently. A singer friend from Miches, Rudy Santana, urged him to record, and with a businessman's backing he made his first production, «Ojo por Ojo», in New York. It includes «Picaflor». In the Dominican Republic it spread first through radio spots paid for by merchants and then, he says, through pirated copies sold in the street, reaching a national audience years before social media existed.

His best-known songs include «Ojo por Ojo», «Comerciante de Amor», «Picaflor», «No Te Vayas», «No Te Quiero Ver», «No Llores, Niña», «El Poeta», «Alguien Durmió en Mi Cama», «Me Desperté Llamándote» and «La Dama de la Traición»; «Ella Me Dijo» (1993) and «Yo No Quiero Sufrir» (1994) belong to the same period. He received three Premios Casandra nominations without winning.

Faith and writing

A practising Christian, he says he has written more than forty songs with a Christian message, among them «Aún Hay Tiempo Para Amar».

Legal cases and withdrawal

In October 2007 he was arrested in a case involving cocaine and weapons, and in June 2009 a Dominican court acquitted him for lack of evidence. In April 2012 he was arrested again in a separate investigation. In interviews he has said that he was wrongly accused, that he spent time in custody, including in Najayo prison, and that these episodes led him to withdraw from public life.

Return

In 2021 he presented new songs, including «Tu Amante Es Otra Mujer», on Silvio Mora's programme. In April 2023 he signed a recording contract with Fernando Production and Elvis Flow, releasing the merengue single «Maluca». In September 2026 the Oficina Nacional de Derecho de Autor (ONDA) recognized his career and his contribution to Dominican popular music.

Legacy

«¡Coge brisa!» and the recordings of the 1990s remain his most recognized work, and he continues to write songs for himself and for other artists.
