J.A. — José Aníbal Cristopher Parra, born on 28 December 1992 — is a Dominican music producer based in Santo Domingo who works in dance and electronic music. He also produces under the name JAENELBEAT.

From beats to the dance floor

He started in 2008 making hip-hop and rap beats, which is where nearly every Dominican producer of his age started. In 2011 he moved into dance and electronic music instead, and by 2014 he was working in house, EDM, festival trap and bass music.

That turn matters. Dominican producers of his generation had dembow in front of them, a genre with an enormous domestic audience and a low cost of entry, and he went the other way, into a music with almost no local infrastructure at all.

Germany

The bet paid off somewhere unexpected. His track Blast caught on in Germany in 2014 after the gaming creators ELoTRiX and MontanaBlack picked it up, and it spread from there.

A Dominican producer’s first real audience arriving through German gaming streams is an accurate picture of how this music travels now. Nobody signed him, nobody promoted him, and the record found the listeners on its own.

In 2018 he worked with the German producer Voldex on a remix of Lullaby by R3hab and Mike Williams, which was played at Bootshaus in Cologne and at the Airbeat One festival — two of the rooms that matter in European dance music.

Since

Hallucinations, made in 2020 with the Filipino artist Zirrion, extended the same pattern of working across distance with people he found online. Blast, Take Me Down, Pass It, Njoom and a VIP edit of Layla are among the tracks under his own name.

He continues to release, most recently Señorito.
