Marielle Hazlo is a Dominican singer, songwriter and pianist working between pop and urban music. She was born in Miami on 30 January 1991 to Dominican parents and grew up in Santo Domingo, and the Dominican press has claimed her as its own since she started.

Deciding at fifteen

She settled on singing as a career at fifteen. She writes her own material and plays piano, which in a scene where most urban records are built by a producer around a hired voice puts her in a smaller category than her billing suggests.

Her early catalogue is the softer end of that: the album Marielle carried Estando Contigo, Rezo, Nunca Imaginé and The Other Side of the Telephone, and Se Muy Bien followed in 2017.

The women’s records

From 2019 the work hardened and the subject narrowed. Sobrenatural came that year, then Bandida in 2021 — a record made explicitly to tell women they are strong, and the one that got her the most coverage — and Pensando en Ti the same July, pop over an urban rhythm.

She has been direct about why. Asked about it in 2018 she said women have a great many battles to fight, and the catalogue since has been an argument rather than a set of love songs.

HAZLO

The 2022 album took her own surname as its title, which in Spanish reads as an instruction: do it. It runs Princesa, Tarzán, Más, Se Fue, Pa la Kalle with Irania, Desacatada, Diva en la Cama and Pensando en Ti.
