Nelson Gil achieved his greatest recognition as the principal vocalist of La Artillería from 1988 to 1996, during the orchestra's most celebrated period. Fronting the ensemble alongside bandleader and arranger Joan Minaya, Gil's energetic vocal delivery and magnetic stage presence became synonymous with some of merengue's most enduring classics. His interpretations of «A Sobar El Pompo», «El Gato», «Loco Amor», «La Gaviota», «La Vieja Y Su Pipa», «Ambiente De Esquina», and «Otra Noche» defined the sound of 1980s and 1990s Dominican merengue.
