Daniel Monción, who also goes by El Monci, is a Dominican bachata songwriter and singer from Santiago de los Caballeros. His name is on records that made other people famous, and for most of his career that is where it stayed.

His compositions have been recorded by Frank Reyes, Alex Bueno and Monchy & Alexandra. He has been described in interview as the writer who has given Frank Reyes more hits than anyone else, which in a catalogue as large as Reyes’s is a considerable claim.

Te Perdí, Culpable, Yo Me Iré, Me Dejaste Abandonado, Amor Desperdiciado, Déjame Entrar en Ti and Ya Basta are the ones people know, and almost nobody knows they are his.

The voice behind the voice

He was also on the records themselves. Alex Bueno has said publicly that Monción sang on most of his choruses, which puts him on a great many bachata recordings without ever appearing on the sleeve.

That is a common shape of career in Dominican music and a badly documented one. The chorus singer and the writer are the two credits that vanish first, and they are the two this man built a life out of.

Under his own name

He has recorded as a soloist as well, and works the diaspora circuit — he was playing clubs in the United States by 2011. Popurrí de Éxitos, the medley he cut of his own catalogue, is exactly what the title says: the songwriter finally singing the songs.

Mereces Más came in 2025, and he keeps releasing under his own name while still writing for others.
