Biography

Sexappeal (born Antonio Rodríguez Castillo on August 22, 1972, in the Villa Juana neighborhood of Santo Domingo) is widely regarded as the leading voice of Dominican salsa. He comes from a household split between discipline and rhythm: his father was a Navy officer and his mother a schoolteacher, professions that did not point toward a life on stage. Before music claimed him, he trained as an automotive mechanic's assistant, work unrelated to the career that would eventually define him.

Early Performances

Sexappeal's first steps in music were not as a singer but as a percussionist. He came up playing güira, tambora, and congas, moving through the Dominican merengue circuit with orchestras such as Ray Guerrero's Orquesta Computarizada and Diómedes y el Grupo Mío. He also danced with the state folkloric ballet, absorbing rhythm and stagecraft from the inside before ever holding a microphone. Slowly, and without a plan to become a frontman, he rose from percussionist to backing vocalist.

The Turning Point: Discovering Salsa

His break came through the Valoy family. Cuco Valoy heard something special in the young güirero's voice—a salsa singer where everyone else saw only a percussionist—and pushed his son, Ramón Orlando, to give him an audition. Ramón Orlando agreed, and together they recorded Sexappeal's first salsa tracks, «La Llorona» and «Ahora Que Te Vas». It was a modest beginning that would take nearly two decades to fully pay off.

Launching a Solo Career

Sexappeal did not step out as a soloist until 2001, nearly thirty years after his birth and years after his first recordings with Ramón Orlando. When he did, «La Llorona» became an international hit—a track still taught in salsa academies today for its driving tempo—and earned him the Casandra Award for New Artist of the Year. He proved, almost immediately, that a salsa career could take root and flourish in a country whose airwaves were dominated by merengue and bachata.

Building a Catalog

Across the following two decades, Sexappeal built a body of work that further defined Dominican salsa through his albums:

  • Necesito Más (2003)

  • Mal o Bien (2006)

  • Porque No Vienes (2011)

  • Salsa 100% Sabrosura Negrura (2020)

These records produced some of his most enduring songs, among them «Mañana Mañana», «Triste Final», «Me Dijo Adiós», and the title track «Mal o Bien». He recorded for prominent labels like J&N Records and later Sony Music, cementing his place with two of the industry's most recognized brands.

Awards and Recognition

  • Named Best Dominican Salsa Singer at the Casandra Awards in both 2005 and 2008.

  • In 2006, he shared a BMI Award with Ramón Orlando, the collaborator who gave him his start.

  • In 2004, he received a Premio Lo Nuestro nomination, proving that his reach extended far beyond the Dominican Republic.

Notable Collaborations

He has shared stages and recording credits with some of the most respected names in salsa worldwide:
